So This Is How Liberty Dies?
Thus, we have a judiciary that wants to be a legislature, a legislature that wants to be a sugar daddy, and a president who wants to be an emperor. It is a sorry sight to behold, and one that will probably make for a great tragic adventure series someday. Unfortunately, we are all cast in the role of the "innocent bystanders." And everyone knows what usually happens to them.

Dictatorship Rules United States
Between the 2002 and 2004 elections, Bush continued to abuse power. He started a war against Iraq on false pretenses, telling the public (and the world) that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and thus presented an imminent threat to the United States. A recent memo revealed that Bush fit the facts to support his conclusion that war was necessary, a crime.

Bush blasts Amnesty report on Guantanamo
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8046041/
“It’s absurd. It’s an absurd allegation. The United States is a country that promotes freedom around the world,” Bush said of the report, which compared Guantanamo to a Soviet-era gulag. He said the Amnesty allegations were based on interviews with detainees, who hated America and were trained to lie.

Tales of "abuse" in Guantanamo testimony
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8040551/
Since its construction three years ago after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the prison camp at Guantanamo has come under scrutiny by critics who contend it has outlived its usefulness, producing scant intelligence information and stoking anti-American hatred.

“All the rules in the United States and in the world, the person is innocent until you prove he is guilty, not innocent. But here, with Americans, the detainees are guilty until proven innocent,” one detainee complained. One prisoner told the tribunal that some of his fellow detainees at Guantanamo are sick and elderly. “I found my brothers being tortured in Kandahar and here,” he said. He compared his detention at Guantanamo to the 1998 Hollywood movie “The Siege,” in which Arabs are indiscriminately hunted down and detained in New York City after a terrorist attack. “I was shocked, thinking am I in that movie or on a stage in Hollywood? Is this really happening? Sometimes I laugh at myself and say when does that movie end?” he says.

The arrests came after the launch of Operation Lightning, a large-scale campaign that entered its third day Tuesday aimed at ridding Baghdad of militants and, in particular, suicide car bombers, the deadliest and regular weapon of choice for insurgents.

The security sweep, intended to make Baghdad immune to insurgent attacks, involves dividing the city into sectors and setting up hundreds of checkpoints in order to restrict the movements of insurgents. Large numbers of Iraqi police, backed up by US forces, spent yesterday fighting with insurgents, searching the streets of Baghdad for rebels and making arrests.

Some of the C.I.A. planes have been used for carrying out renditions, the legal term for the agency's practice of seizing terrorism suspects in one foreign country and delivering them to be detained in another, including countries that routinely engage in torture. The resulting controversy has breached the secrecy of the agency's flights in the last two years, as plane-spotting hobbyists, activists and journalists in a dozen countries have tracked the mysterious planes' movements.

No

Cheney Offended by Amnesty Int'l Report
"Frankly, I was offended by it," Cheney said in the videotaped interview. "For Amnesty International to suggest that somehow the United States is a violator of human rights, I frankly just don't take them seriously." Cheney is the latest Bush administration official to object to the report. On Sunday, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Richard Myers called the Amnesty International report "absolutely irresponsible."

Gitmo Prisoners Told Panel About Abuse
In a statement Sunday, the Pentagon said many of the men have been trained to lie. U.S. troops treat detainees humanely and "U.S. policy condemns and prohibits torture," the statement said, adding that authorities take claims of abuse seriously.

Do The People Of Iraq Have A Right To Resist U.S. Occupation?
Do the people of Iraq have the right to defend themselves against violent foreign invasion and occupation by any means at their disposal against an aggressive and rapacious enemy enjoying overwhelming military superiority?

The Jungle In The Desert
First we were told that when Saddam Hussein was overthrown, the fighting would stop. That was twenty-one months ago. Then, when Saddam Hussein the fugitive was captured, the insurgency would collapse. He was captured over twelve months ago. Then, when authority was transferred to the Iraqi government, the Iraqi military would take over the fighting. That was nearly ten months ago. Then, when Fallujah was occupied, the resistance would be defeated. The city was destroyed over two months ago.

A Pretext for War
Pretext describes how the claims involving Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, the connections between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda, and Hussein's involvement with 9/11, were simply used as pretexts for a war long planned by a small group of neoconservatives supportive of the Israeli government's policies and the expansion of U.S. military power throughout the Middle East. It examines how top Bush administration officials Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, and David Wurmser first drafted a war plan outlining an attack on Iraq, and removal of Saddam Hussein, in 1996. But the document, titled "A Clean Break," was drafted for Israel, not the United States. At the time, the three were acting as advisors to newly elected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "Israel can shape its strategic environment," they wrote. "This effort can focus on removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq – an important Israeli strategic objective." Not satisfied with regime change in Iraq, they went on to recommend that Israel continue to "shape its strategic environment" by "rolling back Syria."

Planned US-Israeli Attack on Iran
Iran is the next military target. The planned military operation, which is by no means limited to punitive strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities, is part of a project of World domination, a military roadmap, launched at the end of the Cold War.

Later, just seconds before he went on TV to tell the world war had started, he vigorously pumped his fist and declared: "I feel good." The extraordinary gesture was in stark contrast to the furrowed brow and look of concern he adopted for the subsequent broadcast.

America's recruiting dilemma

If you're visiting our War Of Terror allies in Uzbekistan, the State Department has a message for you: Watch out for being blown up !

US May Expand War on Terror Beyond al-Qaeda
A new campaign targeting "violent extremism" could also prove controversial, given disputes in the Middle East about how to categorize groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the West Bank that act as political parties while also supporting what the United States calls terrorist activities. "You can't start drawing very precise lines -- security/counterterrorism versus the broader efforts to deal with the roots of terrorism," the intelligence official said.

US to widen focus against "extremism"
The Bush Regime has launched a high-level review of its efforts to battle terrorism, aimed at moving away from a policy that has stressed efforts to capture and kill Al Qaeda leaders and toward what an official called a broader ''strategy against violent extremism."

It's been 1,350 days since GWB said he'd catch UBL 'Dead or Alive!'

More fairy tales about Zarqawi
The US needs an arch-villain for propaganda purposes. Zarqawi was thrust into that role because a large segment of the population knows that Usama died in 2001.
One purpose of a single villain to focus on is to sucker the American people into believing that if we can "get" than one man, the war will be over. Of course, that is a lie, or the war would have ended when word got out Osama had died. The other purpose of a single villain is to obfuscate the fact that the US is dealing with a popular rebellion and is fighting the whole Iraqi people. Having a Zarqawi as the purported figurehead makes it look like the US is fighting only a few people following the "bad guy". But rest assured, if Zarqawi dies (by some reports this will be the second time) there will be another super-villain who will be manufactured to take his place to keep the charade going.

US shifts focus of terrorist battle
Much of the discussion has focused on how to deal with the rise of a new generation of terrorists, schooled in Iraq over the past couple of years. Top government officials are increasingly turning their attention to what one called "the bleed out" of hundreds or thousands of Iraq-trained jihadists back to their home countries throughout the Middle East and Western Europe.
Another aspect is likely to be the addition of public diplomacy efforts aimed at winning over Arab public sentiment.

Inquiry by U.S. Finds 5 Cases of Koran Mistreatment
A front-page article yesterday reported on an American military inquiry's finding that guards or interrogators at the Guantánamo Bay detention center in Cuba "mishandled" the Koran in five cases. The headline exceeded the Pentagon's characterization, saying that the investigation revealed "harm" to the Koran. The Pentagon did not give specifics of the mishandling, so it was not known whether a Koran was actually damaged.

Iraqi forces launch biggest mission since Saddam?
Insurgents kept up their offensive on Sunday. In the town of Tuz Khurmatu south of the strategic oil city of Kirkuk, a suicide car bomber blew up his vehicle near an American military convoy, killing at least two Iraqis, police said. Witnesses said some U.S. casualties were evacuated from the scene by helicopter, but the U.S. military had no immediate information on the attack.

No Early Return from Iraq for U.S. Troops
While the security realities are increasingly suggesting that the U.S. deployment in Iraq may have to continue for six years or longer, it's far from clear that the new government can sell that idea to its own support base.

OCCUPIED BAGHDAD, New Iraq — Explosions rip through marketplaces, scattering blood and vegetables and leaving women wailing in the alleys. Bodies bob in rivers and are dug up from garbage dumps and parks. Kidnappers troll the streets, sirens howl through morning prayers and mortar rounds whistle against skylines of minarets.
With the insurgency killing more civilians, anger against American forces has intensified. Many Iraqis view the U.S. as an unwanted godfather who, despite his prowess and streams of military convoys, can't provide the basics let alone protect them from extremists who badger the nation with Internet screeds and jihadist rants on the radio.

DOD Inquiry Finds Some Quran 'Mishandling'
Allegations of Quran abuse have stirred worldwide controversy. After Newsweek magazine reported earlier this month that U.S. officials had confirmed a Quran was flushed in a toilet, deadly demonstrations were held in Afghanistan although it is not clear what role that story played in sparking the violence. Newsweek later retracted its report.

Pentagon: No Abuse of Koran, Afghan Protests Unrelated
Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice called any disrespect for the Koran abhorrent, and said it will never be tolerated by the United States. She promised that the military will fully investigate the allegation, and that if it is true appropriate action will be taken.

About five minutes into her speech, three audience members wearing black hoods and robes stood up and began chanting, "Stop the killing, U.S. out of Iraq."
The demonstrators were quickly escorted out by police officers as the audience clapped in support of Rice.

Rice rejects Amnesty report on detainees
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has dismissed calls for an independent investigation of conditions at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, and has labeled as ''absurd" a new Amnesty International report equating the facility with Soviet-era gulags.

US press takes umbrage at Amnesty‘s ”gulag” charge
So did Pravda annd Isvestia when it was the USSR whose torture and inhumane treatment of prisoners was the focus.

A military jury Friday acquitted a Navy SEAL lieutenant of all charges in connection with the November 2003 beating and subsequent death of an Iraqi detainee at the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad. Lt. Andrew Ledford, 32, was found not guilty of all charges.

Chain of prisoner abuse starts at the top
We are officially told that the abuse of detainees in American custody - who were stripped naked and beaten, forced to simulate sexual acts, their beards shaved, leered at by women interrogators who rubbed their breasts against them, or smeared them with fake menstrual blood, or grabbed and sometimes kicked their genitals - is the handiwork of a few rogues who are duly punished when caught. To accept this as true we must also believe that these average kids from average American towns are experts on Islam, so well-versed in its strictures about sex that they dreamed up these methods all by themselves.

Stripping Rumsfeld and Bush of Impunity
He added that he was "not aware of anyone in the executive branch authorizing any transfer of a detainee in violation of that policy." "The Bush Administration has a policy of sending people to countries where there is a likelihood that they will be tortured."

More torture in Iraq: Sheikh Ali Bapir's story
Pretend you're trying to explain Iraq's political history to George W. Bush. Yes, I know, it's an excercise in futility, but bear with me. "George, the Ba'athists didn't like the Kurds. Saddam was a Ba'athist, right? Rummy sold Saddam weapons, and Saddam did bad things with them. He also had the Kurds tortured.

Muslim Lives are Desecrated, Not Just Their Book
Thus, if Muslim fury is to be examined appropriately and truthfully, then the desecration of the Quran must be analyzed together with the violent death of "at least" 100,000 Iraqi civilians, the greater majority of them at the hands of the "coalition," according to "the first comprehensive investigation of civilian deaths in Iraq, published in the Lancet," and cited recently by respected Australian journalist John Pilger. Separating both issues is downright irresponsible.
But the interest in appropriateness and truthfulness in the media fades away before the seemingly much more compelling and urgent topic of the theological roots of Muslim violence, and the Muslim and Arab minds' innate deficiency and backwardness.
I am afraid that it will take more than a simple apology or a newspaper retraction to right this collective and perpetual wrong. Much more.

Baghdad will be divided into two main sections, east and west, and within each section there will be smaller areas of control. There will be at least 675 checkpoints and al-Dulaimi said this is the first phase of a security crackdown that will eventually cover all of Iraq. Keep in mind that most of Iraq has remained in a "state of emergency" since the beginning of the siege of Fallujah, on November 8th.
Now with over 675 checkpoints to be manned by the "dogs of the Americans," we'll all have to get used to countless more civilian deaths where "the details are sketchy."

The U.S., focused on North Korea and Iran, is criticized over its own weapons stockpile.

Bush Raises Stakes With North Korea

U.S. intelligence officials have told President Bush news that has left him stunned: Iran has completed all of the elements required for an atomic bomb.

To Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on space: ''We have vowed that we shall not see space filled with weapons of mass destruction, but with instruments of knowledge and understanding. This new ocean must be a sea of peace, [not] a new terrifying theater of war." (Rice University, 1962)

To White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan on negative news media: ''It is never pleasant to be reading things that are not agreeable news, but it is an invaluable arm to the presidency as a check on what is going on . . . [e]ven though we never like it . . . and wish they didn't write it . . . we could not do the job at all in a free society without a very, very active press." (Television interview, 1962)

Freedom's just another word for dodging tough questions

  WELCOME TO HELL
Fake Left Anti-War Groups Out Themselves
Every member of Congress swore to uphold the Constitution. Lying to start a war is as bad as it gets- impeachment proceedings should begin immediately. If they don’t hold Bush Accountable, those members of Congress are guilty of treason, and they too, must be held accountable.

"Individuals have international duties which transcend the national obligations of obedience . . . therefore have the duty to violate domestic laws to prevent crimes against peace and humanity from occurring."—Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal, 1950. Since the obliging and compliant Congress will not stand up to the president as they are supposed to, we have a serious problem in this country. I would not want any weak-minded souls to think I do not respect the processes of government created by the likes of Thomas Jefferson and his friends before 1776. Read all they wrote and said. The Nuremberg statement is now international law and by extension, U.S. law. It is now the duty of all loyal American citizens that the fascist government controlling the United States and the US military can no longer be allowed to exist; it must be replaced. The world, and international law, holds all Americans accountable, and the price to pay is dear.

The recent release of the Downing Street Memo provides new and compelling evidence that the President of the United States has been actively engaged in a conspiracy to deceive and mislead the United States Congress and the American people about the basis for going to war against Iraq. If true, such conduct constitutes a High Crime under Article II, Section 4 of the United States Constitution: “The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

The piece in question is a painting depicting President Bush being sodomized. Artist Alfred Phillips said images of an oil barrel and a man wearing a Muslim headdress in the work are part of a political statement about the United States being abused by oil companies.Michael Friedman, the artist who complained to the county, said the painting is offensive and tasteless."Something snapped inside," he said. Friedman himself entered a piece depicting Pope Benedict XVI with several swastikas in the background. "Sodomy in a public forum is not, from my perspective, considered art," he said. "I think somebody has to draw the line somewhere. I like political satire. However, that type of image ... I don't think is artistic."

"We are taking the fight to the enemy abroad so we do not have to face them here at home!"

At least 1,652 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in 2003.

Iraqi forces ready for Baghdad crackdown
Ever stop to think that if Saddam had really been the evil tyrant we were told he was that the Iraqi people could have treated him exactly the way they are treating the US occupation?
Frankly, I have had my doubts that the stories of mean ol' Saddam were any more accurate than the stories of WMDs ever since I saw that video of Saddam getting up on top of a car to wave at a spontaneous crowd with guns clearly in the hands of the people. No Lexan, no body searches to get near the leader, no barbed wire, no "free speech zones". The Iraqis waved at Saddam and he waved back, in the open, an easy rifle shot from any building in the area.
Contrast that with the way in which US leaders hide behind bullet-proof everything when they go out in public. Contrast that with the way the Iraqi people have reacted to the US occupation.

US puppet government announces state of siege in Baghdad
Dulaimi, describing classic techniques of state terror, intimidation and repression long used in counterinsurgency operations against hostile populations, said the city would be divided into sections, each occupied by a specific police-military unit, and added, “We will also impose a stringent blockade around Baghdad, like a bracelet around an arm, God willing... You will witness unprecedented, strict security measures.”

No injuries were reported in Friday's demonstrations, with police simply watching in most places. In India's Kashmir region, however, police fired tear gas and used batons to disperse hundreds of Muslims gathered outside a mosque in the capital of Srinagar. Women in black veils marched through Kashmir, where schools and businesses were closed as part of the protest, and set American flags and copies of the U.S. Constitution ablaze. "The defilement of our holy book is outrageous because we consider it to be the word of God," thundered Asiya Andrabi, head of the women's group Daughters of the Community, through her veil. "Guantanamo Bay is a cage. It is not a prison." More than 15,000 people took to the streets of Pakistan's largest cities. A demonstration in the capital of Islamabad began in a tense atmosphere, hours after a bomb at a Muslim shrine killed more than 15 people at an annual celebration. The motive for the suspected suicide bombing was not immediately clear. "We condemn sacrilege of the Quran by U.S. extremists," read one banner draped across a bus while protest leaders chanted into loudspeakers during a rally of at least 2,000 in Islamabad. In Pakistan's southwestern city of Quetta, 5,000 demonstrators chanted slogans against the United States and Britain. Another 5,000 gathered in the southern city of Karachi, demanding the expulsion of the U.S. ambassador. Protests also were held in Lahore, near the Indian border. The rallies were organized by a hard-line religious coalition, Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal, or United Action Forum -- a vocal opponent of Pakistan President Gen. Pervez Musharraf. About 12,000 people, many of them supporters of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, gathered in Alexandria, Egypt, filling a three-story building and spilling into surrounding streets, listening to preachers who demanded an apology from U.S. officials. The neighborhood was ringed by police, who arrested 12 of the demonstrator's organizers. About 1,000 people -- mostly lawyers -- gathered in downtown Cairo and were surrounded by double that number of riot police. A similar number gathered in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, carrying black banners and burning American and Israeli flags. "We will cut off the feet that desecrated the Quran!" the crowd yelled. Nearly 1,000 people demonstrated in the predominantly Shiite southern Iraqi city of Basra to protest the alleged desecrations. They also condemned the alleged desecration of a Quran in Ramadi two weeks ago by "Americans and Jews." Two straw dolls -- of President Bush and a rabbi -- were beaten with shoes and slippers, and American, British and Israeli flags were burned. Thousands gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, and demanded an investigation into all actions against Muslims held in Guantanamo. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, protesters shouted, "Go to hell, America!" and waved placards reading "Long Live Islam," as they burned U.S. and Israeli flags outside the U.S. Embassy. Riot police guarded the compound, and the crowd dispersed peacefully nearly an hour later after handing a note to embassy officials. The protest was the second of its kind in as many weeks. About 50 people chanted anti-American slogans and threw tomatoes at a portrait of Bush in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. The protesters were outnumbered 4-1 by police officers in riot gear and left after about an hour.In Bangladesh's capital of Dhaka, about 5,000 people rallied after Friday prayers, spitting on U.S. flags, kicking them and then burning them. They shouted "Death to America!" and "Destroy America!" Many carried copies of the Quran, held over their heads. The protesters used shoes to beat a Bush dummy and burned an effigy of the president, chanting "Bush -- the killer!" Riot police watched the demonstrators, who dispersed peacefully. Anti-U.S. sentiment has been running high in Muslim countries since the Newsweek report. The Bush administration blamed it for demonstrations this month in Afghanistan, where more than a dozen people died and scores were injured.

Muslims denounce 'US Koran abuse'
The demonstrations came after the US military admitted some of its guards had mishandled the Muslim holy book. But the camp commander said no credible evidence had been found that the Koran had been flushed down a toilet.

US: FBI records detail Quran abuse by US guards
Disclosure follows a row over a similar claim made in retracted Newsweek article. The White House said the report had done "lasting damage" to the US image in the Muslim world.

So the newly declassified FBI documents showing allegations of U.S. guards abusing the Koran have made a huge splash in the U.S. Corporate State media, right?
"No sooner does Newsweek retract its Koran desecration story then a flurry of news reports attest to just what Newsweek seemed to be reporting."

Just Shut It Down
I am talking about the war-of-terrorism Concentration Camp at Guantánamo Bay. Just shut it down and then plow it under. It has become worse than an embarrassment. I am convinced that more Americans are dying and will die if we keep the Gitmo prison open than if we shut it down. So, please, Mr. President, just shut it down.

In U.S. Report, Brutal Details of 2 Afghan Inmates' Deaths
The prisoner, a slight, 22-year-old taxi driver known only as Dilawar, was hauled from his cell at the detention center in Bagram, Afghanistan, at around 2 a.m. to answer questions about a rocket attack on an American base. When he arrived in the interrogation room, an interpreter who was present said, his legs were bouncing uncontrollably in the plastic chair and his hands were numb. He had been chained by the wrists to the top of his cell for much of the previous four days. Most of the interrogators had believed Mr. Dilawar was an innocent man who simply drove his taxi past the American base at the wrong time.

Pentagon Analyst In Israel Spy Case Is Called a 'Patriot'
By March 2003, the Bush administration had decided to work with Iranian-sponsored opposition groups to build an interim government in Baghdad. Indeed, the recently elected prime minister, Ibrahim Jafari, was initially a leader of an Iranian-supported party, Dawa, and was included in the first Iraqi Governing Council. At the same time, American envoys were holding intensive negotiations about Iraq with the Iranians under the auspices of a U.N. multicountry group designed to coordinate Afghanistan policy.
These developments, according to Mr. Franklin's former colleagues and other government officials, worried the Pentagon analyst, who, in turn, attempted to reverse what he saw as a disastrous policy decision. Mr. Franklin had, in his work on Iran at the Pentagon in late 2001, identified what one source described as "Iranian hunter-killer teams" in Afghanistan that were threatening American Special Forces. By the spring of 2003, he believed American forces in Iraq would be under a similar threat from units of Iran's Revolutionary Guard and that this information had to get to the White House.

At the interrogators' behest, a guard tried to force the young man to his knees. But his legs, which had been pummelled by guards for several days, could no longer bend. An interrogator told Dilawar that he could see a doctor after they finished with him. When he was finally sent back to his cell, though, the guards were instructed only to chain the prisoner back to the ceiling. "Leave him up," one of the guards quoted Mr Claus as saying. Several hours passed before a doctor finally saw Dilawar. By then he was dead, his body beginning to stiffen. It would be many months before army investigators learned a final horrific detail - most of the interrogators had believed Dilawar was an innocent man who simply drove his taxi past the American base at the wrong time.

Neither genuine freedom nor truly representative democracies are on Bush's foreign-policy agenda, no matter how much prominence these topics receive in the president's ever-predictable speeches. We know for a fact that most tyrannical, repressive regimes have historically been the traditional friends and allies of successive U.S. administrations, in the Middle East and elsewhere.

With no weapons of mass destruction found and nothing to tie Saddam to Sept. 11, the White House has justified the war as America's way to democratize Iraq and, through it, the Arab world.

Bill Maher's Remark About Army 'Borders on Treason
A congressman says comedian Bill Maher's comment that the U.S. military has already recruited all the "low-lying fruit" is possibly treasonous and at least grounds to cancel the show.
Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., takes issue with remarks on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher," first aired May 13, in which Maher points out the Army missed its recruiting goal by 42 percent in April. "More people joined the Michael Jackson fan club," Maher said. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies." Army Reserve Pfc. England was accused of abusing prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. "I think it borders on treason," Bachus said. "In treason, one definition is to undermine the effort or national security of our country."

Pfc. Lynndie England on Tuesday surrendered her right to challenge the seven charges she faces in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, moving her one step closer to a new military trial.
Many of the acts were captured in photographs. In one, the 22-year-old reservist held a leash looped around the neck of a hooded, naked prisoner. Another showed her next to nude prisoners stacked in a pyramid, while a third depicted England pointing at a prisoner's genitals as a cigarette dangled from her lips.

The United States has become increasingly identified with the torturing of prisoners. The issuance of new rules and the prosecution of a few enlisted men and women is no answer. Anti-Americanism can be expected throughout the world as long as the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq continues. What is needed right now is a public investigation of interrogation methods with publication of the results - not just leaks to newspapers. Responsible higher-ups must be identified and punished, including those who manipulated official policy to permit torture.

The Return of the Body Count
In Iraq, the Bush administration and the American military are fighting a partial war in a near non-state, mainly in one part of an increasingly riven country, against an insurgency without a charismatic leader, a single party, or significant backing from other states elsewhere – and yet, so far, the stateless results do look eerily similar to those in Vietnam. The frustration over "our Iraqis" is only going to rise, as will frustration over our inability to destroy the insurgency of "their Iraqis" – and as this process intensifies, and the administration feels yet more pressure at home over its Iraqi adventure, look for the public metrics to multiply and grow ever more problematic. There's only one word for it: Incredible.

U.S. and Iraqi troops detained about 300 people in what a military spokesman, Lt. Col. Clifford Kent, called the largest combined operation by the two countries' forces to date. The overnight sweeps targeted neighborhoods around the U.S.-run prison at Abu Ghraib and near the road to Baghdad's main airport. Both areas have been the scene of repeated insurgent attacks.

The warriors of Iraq's new army excel at wearing balaclavas, eating raw cat and driving into battle at hair-raising speeds.
Catching, skinning and eating small mammals are the least of the skills that the captain and the men under his command must master if, as the United States army hopes, they are to assume the main burden of the struggle against the insurgents by the end of this year.

What can be done if these crazy motherfuckers bomb a harmless nuclear power plant. There is no constitutional remedy other than impeachment (fat chance of that)to bring about change and no way ever to vote them out of power?

Let me get this straight: The White House makes a mistake on the intelligence about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, relying heavily on its own unidentified sources who turn out to have their own political agendas, and what follows is a war in which tens of thousands of Iraqis die. I'm being vague on the number because the administration refuses to count. Thousands of young Americans are maimed and more than 1,600 lose their lives; the flag-draped coffins are flown home, as in previous wars, but this administration doesn't want you to see them.
And we're supposed to blame Newsweek's editorial procedures?

President Bush:
Q: [...]And if I may ask you, Mr. President, as you know, the casualties of Iraq is again high today -- 50 more people dying. Do you think that insurgence is getting harder now to defeat militarily? Thank you. PRESIDENT BUSH: No, I don't think so. I think they're being defeated. And that's why they continue to fight.
So if the insurgents stopped fighting, would that mean we were losing? What the hell kind of answer is this? What the hell kind of logic is this supposed to be?

A Pretext for War
Also, legislation forbidding deficit spending for a war should be enacted. The cost of a war would have to be paid as a surcharge on all taxpayers in the year the fighting takes place. In this way, nearly every citizen would have both a personal and financial stake in a war. If such were the case today, we would not be in this situation – and if we were, there would certainly be calls for impeachment.

Defensive regime used defensive back, spit him out, and polished him up all nice and shiny.

Family: Army 'Let Down' Tillman
More than a year after their son was shot several times by his fellow Army Rangers on a craggy hillside near the Pakistani border, Tillman's mother and father said in interviews that they believe the military and the government created a heroic tale about how their son died to foster a patriotic response across the country. They say the Army's "lies" about what happened have made them suspicious, and that they are certain they will never get the full story. "Maybe lying's not a big deal anymore," he said. "Pat's dead, and this isn't going to bring him back. But these guys should have been held up to scrutiny, right up the chain of command, and no one has."

Presently we are in a terrible situation. We have been lied to by our elected officials from both parties for so long we automatically assume they are full of shit. Except when we need to. There have been at least 20 assassinations of Iraqis holding key government, political or religious posts since the first democratically elected government was announced April 28.
May 23: Maj. Gen. Wael al-Rubaei, a top official in the National Security Ministry, is killed along with his driver in a drive-by shooting in Baghdad as they were heading to work.

Party celebrating assassination survival bombed!

Car Bombings Across Iraq
About 610 people, including 49 U.S. troops, have been killed since April 28, when Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari announced his new government. Washington hopes the government will eventually train police and an army capable of securing Iraq and allowing the withdrawal of foreign troops.

Five U.S. Soldiers Killed in Northern Iraq 5/23
...At least 1,634 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003!

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 1,496 U.S. military members have died, according to AP's count. That includes at least 1,139 deaths resulting from hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

Desertion Huge Problem for US in Iraq War
I challenge the use of the word "desertion" as no man or woman in uniform is legally obligated to risk their lives in a war which is itself illegal.

There are bombed villages and desperate people. There are dogs eating corpses thrown into a mass grave. And most unremitting of all is the image of a young Iraqi girl, no more than eight or nine, all but one of her arms severely burned and blistered and the sound of her screams.

US Officers Plot Their Own Exit Strategies
Many young lieutenants and captains, key leaders in combat, are deciding against Army careers in light of the open-ended war on terrorism.

US to Build Four Giant New Bases in Iraq
US military commanders are planning to pull back their troops from Iraq's towns and cities and redeploy them in four giant bases in a strategy they say is a prelude to eventual withdrawal.

Car Bomb Kills 10, Wounds 110 at Baghdad Restaurant
The Iraqi Ministry of State for National Security Affairs said al-Rubaie was "assassinated by the treacherous and criminal hand of terrorism while on his way to work."

Massive US Op Launched Near Baghdad
The military said the ongoing operation was focused on the Abu Ghraib neighbourhood, from which many of the deadly attacks carried out daily on the perilous Baghdad airport road are thought to originate.

The Unknown Unknowns of the Abu Ghraib Scandal
Despite Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo - not to mention Iraq and the failure of intelligence - and the various roles they played in what went wrong, Rumsfeld kept his job; Rice was promoted to secretary of state; Alberto Gonzales, who commissioned the memos justifying torture, became attorney general; deputy secretary of defence Paul Wolfowitz was nominated to the presidency of the World Bank; and Stephen Cambone, under-secretary of defence for intelligence and one of those most directly involved in the policies on prisoners, was still one of Rumsfeld's closest confidants. President Bush, asked about accountability, told the Washington Post before his second inauguration that the American people had supplied all the accountability needed - by re-electing him. Only seven enlisted men and women have been charged or pleaded guilty to offences relating to Abu Ghraib. No officer is facing criminal proceedings.

Tabloid says it paid U.S. official for Saddam Hussein photos
Bush said he did not think the images would incite further anti-American sentiment.

Dozens Have Alleged Koran's Mishandling
Newsweek only harmed itself by backing off the story.

FLASHBACK: Camp Delta death chamber plan
A court and execution chamber could be built at the US detention camp in Cuba under plans being drawn up by military officials.

'US jailers tortured innocent Afghan to death'
Hanging a man by the wrists until he dies. Just shameful.
The Romans did that to a Rabbi about 2000 years ago and folks are still talking about it. So, will the world still remember America's barbarity 2000 years from now?

Who's To Blame For Anger At U.S.?
The Neocons influence on the White House has revealed itself in the Quran affair. Just as Israel always reacts to criticism of its actions by attacking the messenger, so to has the White House reacted to exposure of the Quran story by attacking NEWSWEEK. And, just as Israel never admits error no matter what it is caught doing, so to has the White House totally avoided the matter of whether their treatment of prisoners is legal and humane or not.

A New Chapter in the Valerie Plame Case
The Plame leak is a very serious one. It is an especially nasty case of revenge for truth-telling: To go after Wilson's wife, for his Op Ed, is dirty business indeed. Even more important, for Valerie Plame (and possibly others who covertly associated with her abroad, and were outed when she was outed) this leak could be life-threatening.

The secret Downing Street memo
The memo that proves Bush and Blair agreed to invade Iraq and that the "intelligence" (i.e. propaganda and lies) was tailored to fit that objective.

AIPAC turns on political star power for show of strength
ISRAELI SPYING
Attention spies: Having a war criminal and a man who routinely defies the United Nations speak at your show is NOT going to impress people.

AIPAC'S POWER BASE - AMERICA'S REAL TERRORISTS!
Through a small, rich and powerful Jewish supported pro-Israeli tax-exempt lobby, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or simply AIPAC, virtually all American domestic and foreign policy is now being controlled by a foreign government entanglement. This is done by targeting American politicians: those who are pro-Israel receive campaign funding and favorable publicity through a myriad of Jewish organizations, magnified by the liberal and Democratic Party-leaning American press; those politicians not favoring policies benefiting Israel are targeted by Jews all over America who send money to help finance that politician’s opponent.

Moslems Try to Attack Laura Bush on Temple Mount
Odd that there is no mention of the Israelis shouting "Free Pollard Now!" who had to be held back by police.

So when do we get invaded to remove the rogue government that spies on its own people, gases its own people during anti War protests, stages "terrorist" attacks, holds crooked elections, attacks other nations without cause, and uses torture on innocent people looking for WMD that don't exist?
