Saturday: 8 GIs, 64 Iraqis Killed, 401 Injured; Chemical Bombs in Anbar Province ...A series of chemical attacks in Anbar Province punctuated a relatively quiet day in Iraq. Overall, at least 64 people were killed or found dead today, but at least 401 were wounded or poisoned. Eight American servicemembers were also killed in separate incidents over the last two days. The U.S. military reported four GIs were killed when they came across a roadside bomb in western Baghdad; the blast was followed by small arms fire that wounded another soldier. An American soldier was also shot to death in Baquba, while another died in a non-combat related incident. On Friday, another American soldier lost his life in a roadside bomb explosion south of Baghdad. On March 14th, another soldier died of wounds received on March 5 in Samarra. Several GIs were also sickened in the chemical bomb blasts near Fallujah. Near Fallujah, three suicide bomber attacks killed at least eight people and sickened approximately 350 Iraqis and six U.S. servicemembers. The bombers added chlorine to the explosives for maximum damage. The first attack occurred at a checkpoint in Ramadi and injured one GI and one Iraqi. The second attack was near a housing complex in Ameriya late last night while the third one occurred 40 minutes later south of Fallujah and targeted a tribal leader. Injuries range from wounds created by the explosion to rashes and vomiting from chlorine exposure. Two of the bombs were hidden in dump trucks filled with chlorine canisters. In Baghdad, two policemen were gunned down in the Bayaa neighborhood. Also, a Sunni mosque in the Doura neighborhood was blown up, but no casualties were reported. Two civilians were injured when a bomb exploded in al-Sileikh. Another civilian was killed when a bomb was detonated in the al-Khadraa neighborhood. Gunmen abducted a radio newscaster and his driver. Also, 19 bodies were recovered in several neighborhoods. Two bodies were fished out of the Tigris River at Suwayra, where bodies often are caught in the intricate irrigation system. In Mosul, a roadside bomb killed a policeman and wounded another. Two infants were found alive and lying next to two dead women. Six dumped bodies were also found. A policeman was killed and four others wounded in Hilla when their patrol came across a roadside bomb intended for a senior police official who survived the blast. A bomb at a marketplace killed one and wounded five more. A policeman and two civilians were killed and five others wounded during a car bomb attack on a checkpoint in al-Harithiya. Two people were killed and 15 injured due to a mortar explosion in Madaen. Outside Tikrit, gunmen killed a police lieutenant colonel on his work to work. Gunman killed five fish farmers in Bani Saad. In the nearby village of al-Sakran three civilians were gunned down. Fifteen Iraqis were wounded during a mortar attack in Basra. In Fallujah, a clash between gunmen and Iraqi troops resulted in one dead Iraqi soldier and two injured. Two civilians were killed during a bomb blast in Samarra. Two men who were observed planting a roadside bomb were killed by U.S. troops near Mirad as Suki. In Mahmudiya, two pilgrims were injured by a bomb blast...

For all the talk of Government Intelligence Failures, no one ever gives any credit to the millions of pre emptive protesters around the world that questioned the threat from Iraq’s WMDS and Iraq’s alliance to “Al Queda” and the Nine Eleven. The protestors were right. The Government and news media are still in a bubble, still lying about Iraq and Nine Eleven.

Now that Rep. Wilson is on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence she doesn’t seem to be questioning the latest National Intelligence Estimate that is extremely pessimistic about drifting sideways in Iraq? In the last month over 1,000 U.S. Troops were wounded in Iraq! Wilson is still lying about Iraq or has some serious cognitive dissonance.

Rep. Wilson claims to exercise oversight on the Executive Branch, but in the last 5 years the President has issued signing statements giving him the authority to ignore over 800 laws passed by the Legislature. That isn’t exercising oversight, that is appeasing Tyranny. Rep. Wilson took an oath to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution, not the Grand Old Party, not George W. Bush, not Israel or AIPAC. Rep. Wilson claims to have stood up to the White House on it’s illegal warrant-less wiretapping on U.S. Citizens, illegal secret prisons, but mysteriously later relented and backed off voting to legalize illegal programs.
The Military Detainee Act is unconstitutional and will not protect U.S. War Criminals.

There isn’t any oversight from this corrupt congress, not even amongst itself. From former Rep. Delay, Rep. Cunningham, Rep. Ney, Rep. Foley. Rep. Wilson was the #1 Recipient of Foley money; she donated the filthy money to Christian groups! What would Jesus think?

Life went forward in the "new country". And it was tough as hell for awhile, but it DID get better, as history now shows us.
Life would be tough from a real "revolution" today. Life as WE know it now (WE being the current citizens of the United States, born anywhere between 1900 and today) would radically change. And I submit to you that it will SUCK, compared to the quality of life we've been used to. Many won't be able to handle it--as with any other revolution in history, "only the strong would survive". Thus, many of us would die.
But I maintain--as many of my fellow countrymen and women do--that if we don't do something about the jeopardy our countries' ideals are in now, we are doomed to a hell none of us would ever submit to willingly, and that the Jeffersons, Washingtons, etc. would actually wage all-out war against, rather than face. I say that an America having rid itself once and for the current corrupt government--one that daily demonstrates total fealty to another soverign nation, putting it above THEIR OWN--will FIND a statesman worthy of the ability to help lay out a new set of tenets, ones that allow us to PUNISH these traitors we haven't been able to remove from our midst in any other way. That will be your "hero", but you won't know it now--only history will be able to judge that. And if you, Mr. Reader, believe that someone who points out wrongdoing in government isn't a "hero", then you might want to step back and take a good long look in the mirror. Maybe it's just that you're one of the "wrongdoers", and simply labor under the delusion that "Joe American" isn't smart enough to see that reflected in the ideals of YOUR letter.

George WMD Bush teared up on Memorial Day and said we must complete the mission in Iraq to honor the 18,000 wounded and 2,400-plus dead. Well, I have a question. What is the mission?
Is it to overthrow Saddam Hussein? He's been overthrown and is awaiting execution by a kangaroo court we selected to do the hit.
Is it to allow the Iraqi people to hold elections? They've held three elections – one for an interim government, one for a Constitution, and one for a permanent government, which is now in place except for two Cabinet positions.
Oh, I forgot that when the president was selling this war, he said the mission was to disarm Saddam because he had all those awful weapons of mass destruction. Well, of course, they didn't exist, and now the president doesn't talk about them.
But if the purpose was to install an elected government, why are we still there? Why are we spending half a billion dollars to build the world's largest embassy, one that dwarfs Saddam's palaces and that ticks off the Iraqi people? Why, after three years and billions of our tax dollars, do the Iraqi people lack electricity, clean water and sewers? They had all those things under Saddam until we destroyed them with our bombs and missiles.
And if we want the Iraqi army to handle security, why are its soldiers still driving around in Toyotas? Where are their armored personnel carriers, their tanks, their light machine guns and light artillery? Surely there is a lot of that stuff left over. Why doesn't the president stop spreading heifer dust? We take an 18-year-old kid, give him 18 weeks of training and ship him off to combat. Is this administration saying it takes five years to train an Iraqi lad?
I think the only real mission left is to wipe the egg off the president's face. The invasion of Iraq was unconstitutional. There was no declaration of war, just a namby-pamby, you-can-use-force-if-you-want-to resolution passed by those spineless mountebanks who inhabit Congress. It was illegal under international law, since Iraq had not attacked us or even threatened to attack us. Iraq was cooperating with the arms inspectors and telling the truth about the lack of weapons. That's why the U.N. Security Council refused to give the president the resolution he wanted as a cover for his war.
Most of all, though, it was flat stupid, as anybody who knows the Middle East could have told him. To use a favorite phrase of his father, when the prez ordered the invasion of Iraq, he stepped into deep doo-doo of the camel variety. I doubt if he knows how to get out of Iraq even if he wanted to, and I don't think he does. I think he intends to stay there indefinitely.
And if that's his intention, then he should tell the American people that their sons and daughters will continue to die or be maimed indefinitely. The Iraqis are a fierce people. No elf is going to sprinkle fairy dust on them and make them fall in love with us. Why should they? We destroyed their country and caused the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children just with the sanctions, not counting the thousands we've killed since then.
The Iraqis have many admirable traits, but I don't think forgiveness is one of them. Does the president remember what the Iraqi father told an American officer when the officer asked what compensation he would accept for his son, whom one of our soldiers had killed? He said, "Ten dead Americans."
And what has the president's blundering accomplished? He's converted an old enemy of Iran into a new ally of Iran. Did he hear the Iraqi prime minister when he said no attacks on Iran from Iraqi soil will be tolerated? Did the president hear him when he said Iran has a right to enrich uranium? The president has created gas lines in an oil-rich country. He's restarted inflation and the Cold War.
Perhaps we're the ones who should be tearing up. We have two more years of this guy, and he still believes that, except for a misspoke word now and then, he's done everything right. At least he's smart enough not to go hunting with Dick Cheney. That's our small consolation.

As details of the atrocities in Haditha continue to surface in the media, it is clear that George Bush is either completely divorced from reality or simply incapable of grasping the catastrophe he has created. In fact, he is as culpable in the deaths of the “24 unarmed Iraqis” as if he had put the gun to their heads’ and shot them one by one.
The administration makes no attempt to defend its war. Instead, it has stepped up its public relations campaign to connect the conflict with the hobgoblin of Islamic fanaticism. This is a bad plan that appears to be backfiring as Bush’s approval ratings continue to plummet. All the same, the war on terror is now regularly invoked to rationalize the systematic destruction of Iraqi society as well as the skyrocketing civilian death toll; now well over 100,000 Iraqis.
Bush’s commencement speech this weekend at West Point is a good example of White House attempts to promote its bogus anti-terror crusade while diverting attention from America’s depredations in Iraq. The speech gives us a way to compare Bush’s sales pitch for war with the reality on the ground. It also allows us to ask whether Bush is a delusional megalomaniac who should not be held accountable for his decisions or a calculating despot who fully understands the savagery he’s unleashed on the world.

And we will not rest until this threat to our country has been removed…Against such an enemy there is only one effective response: We will never back down, we will never give in, and we will never accept anything less than complete victory."
The reality: Photographs taken by American military intelligence have provided crucial evidence that up to 24 Iraqis were massacred by marines in Haditha. One portrays an Iraqi mother and young child, kneeling on the floor, as if in prayer. They have been shot dead at close range. The pictures show other victims, shot execution-style in the head and chest in their homes. An American government official said they revealed that the marines involved had “suffered a total breakdown in morality and leadership”.( LA Times)
Bush speech: "This is only the beginning. The message has spread from Damascus to Tehran that the future belongs to freedom, and we will not rest until the promise of liberty reaches every people in every nation."
The reality: The killings are emerging as the worst known American atrocity of the Iraq war. At least seven women and three children were among those killed. Witness accounts obtained by The Sunday Times suggest the toll of children may be as high as six. “This one is ugly,” a US military official said. The evidence points fatefully to a murder spree by marines. The stain on the American military could prove harder to erase than the photographs of sadistic prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib. Comparisons are being made to the My Lai massacre in 1968 in Vietnam, in which American soldiers slaughtered up to 500 villagers.”
Bush speech: “Difficult challenges remain in both Afghanistan and Iraq, but America is safer and the world is more secure because these two countries are now democracies and they are allies in the cause of freedom and peace…With the formation of this unity government, the world has seen the beginning of something new - a constitutional democracy in the heart of the Middle East.”
The reality: Yunis Salim Khafif, pleaded for his life in English, shouting: “I am a friend, I am good. I am good” …. “But they killed him, his wife and daughters.” (LA Times).
Bush speech: ""We're still in the early stages of this struggle for freedom and, like the first years of the Cold War, we've seen setbacks and challenges and days that have tested America's resolve. Yet we've also seen days of victory and hope.
The reality: “About 10 marines entered the home of a 76-year-old Abdul Hameed Ali Hassan, whose leg had been amputated because of diabetes. He was a blind old man in a wheelchair. They threw hand grenades and began firing in all directions. Hassan’s granddaughter, 10 year old Iman Waleed, was in her nightclothes. Her father was in a nearby room reading the Koran. The Marines entered the room and killed him. Then they gathered the rest of the family into one room —threw in two hand grenades and started shooting them. The adults tried to protect the children with their bodies, but all were slain. (LA Times)
The massacre in Haditha reveals the yawning chasm between Bush’s promises of freedom and democracy and the brutal realities of occupation, subjugation and war crimes. Haditha strips away the fabric of lies which masks the true motives behind the war in Iraq. As the details continue to appear in the news, the Bush administration is sure to lose whatever is left of its tattered credibility and moral authority. Public support will vanish accordingly.
Haditha is summary-event, much like My Lai. It epitomizes 6 years of failed leadership, unprovoked aggression, and human rights abuse. It reframes the war as a vicious and excessive attack on a civilian population to establish control over vital resources. It was executed with the cynical belief that the mountains of carnage could be papered-over by jingoism and propaganda. That illusion has begun to shatter; exposing the ocean of suffering it has left in its wake.
Who’ll believe Bush’s rosy scenarios after they’ve heard the testimony of children who watched while their parents and siblings were butchered in front of their own eyes?

Ricks found that one “selective leak”--about a recently discovered letter written by Zarqawi--was handed by the military to Dexter Filkins, the longtime New York Times reporter in Baghdad. Filkins's resulting article, about the Zarqawi letter boasting of foreigners' role in suicide attacks in Iraq, ran on the front page of the Times on Feb. 9, 2004.“Leaks to reporters from U.S. officials in Iraq are common, but official evidence of a propaganda operation using an American reporter is rare,” Ricks observed. He quoted Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the U.S. military's chief spokesman when the propaganda campaign began in 2004: "We trusted Dexter to write an accurate story, and we gave him a good scoop."Filkins, in an e-mail to Ricks, said he assumed the military was releasing the Zarqawi letter "because it had decided it was in its best interest to have it publicized." President Bush was generous of word yesterday when he took questions from a group of students at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
"I'll be glad to opine on it," he said on the topic of immigration.
"Kind of rambling here," he observed after giving a lengthy discourse on the benefits of freedom.
"I'm getting wound up," he confessed on the subject of protectionism.
"I'm not going to filibuster, I promise," he said, midway through an 865-word answer to a question about governing philosophy.
But then a second-year master's student asked about "Prosecutor Fitzgerald" and White House leaks to punish a critic. You could practically hear the zipper sealing the president's lips.
"Yes, no, I, this is, there's an ongoing legal proceeding which precludes me from talking a lot about the case," the president finally managed to say. All he could answer, Bush said, was that he declassified a National Intelligence Estimate because "it made sense for people to see the truth."
That answer neatly encapsulated the White House's response to the CIA leak imbroglio: No comment and non sequitur.
As for the non sequitur, it's true that Bush declassified the NIE, on July 18, 2003. But this was after vice presidential aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby had done his leaking -- with Bush and Vice President Cheney's blessing, Libby has testified. And the NIE said nothing about administration critic Joseph C. Wilson IV and his CIA-employed wife, whose unmasking started the whole scandal.
Nor is the White House's no-comment ending the questioning. Bush had no problem commenting on an ongoing legal proceeding when he said he believed that Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), the indicted former House majority leader, was innocent. "Presidential prerogative," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said then.
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, recommends that Bush exercise his prerogative again. "I think that there has to be a detailed explanation precisely as to what Vice President Cheney did, what the president said to him, and an explanation from the president as to what he said so that it can be evaluated," Specter said on "Fox News Sunday."
The White House, evidently, is unmoved by Specter's suggestion. McClellan referred 16 times in his briefings yesterday to the "ongoing" leak case as his reason for not commenting -- as when CBS News's Bill Plante tried to plumb the timing of the leaks.
"You're getting into questions about an ongoing legal proceeding," the spokesman warned.
"No, it's a timing question," the reporter corrected.
"We are not going to comment on it while it's ongoing," McClellan persisted.
"I'm not asking about the investigation," Plante pointed out.
"We're not going to do anything that would jeopardize an ongoing matter," came the inevitable reply.
As the questioning continued, McClellan offered that he would like nothing more than to dish about the leak case. "It's not a question of whether or not we would like to talk more about it," he pleaded.
The silence on the leaks is quite at odds with the president's increasingly garrulous public personality. His Iraq speeches are growing more frequent, and more confessional. "We have learned from our mistakes," he confided to the SAIS crowd, which answered each of his usual applause lines with silence.
Students signed and circulated an anti-Bush petition before the event, but the president, his jacket open, stepping away from the lectern, retained good cheer even punting difficult questions.
"I don't mean to be dodging the question, although it's kind of convenient in this case," he said when referring to the Pentagon a question about Iraq military contractors.
"I get protested all the time," he said cheerfully when asked about his "polarizing" presidency.
Asked about prostitution and human trafficking, he offered: "I will be glad to call Condi."
When a student rose and said he was studying "international energy policy," Bush, anticipating an energy question, interjected: "Oh, good!"
But it was not good. The student asked about Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald's filing claiming "evidence of a concerted effort by the White House to punish Joseph Wilson."
The president hitched up his suit pants by the belt. He took a sip of water. He stepped away from the podium, then leaned on it with his left elbow.
He put his fingers to his heart when he spoke about declassifying the NIE. "I thought it was important for people to get a better sense for why I was saying what I was saying," he reasoned.
That was preceded and followed by the no comment. "You're just going to have to let Mr. Fitzgerald complete his case," Bush said.
By that standard, Bush may not have to comment until sometime after 2008.

Almost three years ago, probably in response to one of my scathing articles denouncing US foreign policy, I received an email from a soldier’s mom which became “a keeper.” It was respectful, ending . . ."Regardless of your opinions on both the war and US foreign policy, I hope it’s in your heart to support OUR troops.” A most difficult request, indeed!
It’s a topic that even the most dedicated anti-war activists amongst us would rather sweep under the carpet. In our daily dealings with family, peers, friends and neighbors, when the subject of “troop support” surfaces, one often accedes to a condescending level of support for the “young soldiers” who are fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan . . . or just serving in the military.
We seem to get better and better at political correctness and rationalization as time goes by, or as circumstances dictate. Grouping soldiers by age is probably a face saving way to whitewash, to decriminalize the actions by some in the military: those who do not yet know better. We prefer not to blame those soldiers who kill and destroy; after all, it’s their job. They are just following orders from their commanders.
And, we certainly don’t want to embarrass the political leadership that brought about this mayhem; after all, they were “duped” by flawed intelligence. Furthermore, the consent for war was not only bipartisan, but overwhelming by those “in the know.”
And, most importantly, we mustn’t blame ourselves; after all, what did we know about those faraway peoples and places? Ours was fear of terrorism, our call to arms 9/11.
Perhaps these phony reasons, this illusory rationale, bring us to that uncomfortable issue of having to support the troops. The question of morality for the troops, or morality for the government, or our own morality, is one that begs not to be asked. Not out loud. And, if morality is not the test, what other choice do we have but to support the troops?
A bold pronouncement saying, “I do not support the troops,” is not something that you expect to read or to hear in the mainstream media. And I hadn’t . . . not until March 27, when a former marine of the Vietnam era had his sentiments unmistakably expressed in a letter sent to The Oregonian. Defiant and angry, he started his letter to the editor this way: “OK, if no one else will say it, I’ll say it: ‘I do not support the troops.’” No words minced with this marine . . . as he stood tall, at attention, with a “semper fidelis” to truth!
A paragraph in his letter summed up how he felt: “When I was 18 and as stupid as all the troops over there now, including the square-jawed, talking-head generals, I was supposed to be bringing democracy to a Third World country. It was baloney then and it’s baloney now. All we did (I was a grunt in the Marines) was make a thousand Viet Cong for every one we killed. And the ones I killed have haunted me since.”
Maybe A.B. was a “stupid grunt” at that tender age fighting in the jungles half a world away . . . but what he saw and did in Nam turned the lights on for him, humanized him; and that “stupidity” did transform into wisdom, not just for him but for the rest of us.
What’s wrong with our nation? Why are the military, Capitol Hill, the White House . . . and the rest of us watching this Vietnam re-enactment in Iraq without batting an eye?
Perhaps our marine gave us a partial answer by saying in his letter that war is for cowards, finishing his letter: “War gives the Pentagon’s cowardly bureaucrats, the federal government’s cowardly politicians, and America’s citizen cowards the chance to try to convince themselves that they’re not the cowards they know they are.”
We can and should support troops-to-be, but do so before they become troops. We should post a warning sign, and disclaimer, in all recruiting stations. Prospective enlistees should be told that their new employer will not be the Department of Defense, but the Department of War; and that their service will not be in the defense of freedom and democracy, but in the building of an empire for America’s powerful elite. And that their countrymen, for all the yellow ribbons and pseudo-patriotic talk, will ultimately blame them for the added terrorism they instigate with their wars. Just like there is truth in lending, we should demand truth in recruitment.
And the most important part of the disclaimer should be: That following orders is not a defense at all – not amoral orders. It’s not Bush, or Cheney or Rumsfeld who will be blamed when they pull the trigger to kill or to maim; or when they disrupt the lives of others, whatever excuse or pretense. As soldier for the empire, you are the aggressor, the bad guy . . . not those you face who are defending their own country, whether you call them terrorists or insurgents. American soldiers should not be deceived into thinking of themselves as liberators when they, in fact, become captive or casualties to memories that will haunt them for the rest of their lives . . . even those with a callous conscience.
We should support young people, yes. But we must do it before they become troops; for there are many nations to conquer and, for now, none to defend from. And that applies not only to the regular services, but also the Reserves and the National Guard; all equally disposable to the Pentagon, and the military-industrial complex it serves.
Perhaps if we had a conscript military -- one designed for true national defense, instead of a volunteer army, we wouldn’t have to support the troops; for the troops, you may rest assured, would not be today in Iraq.

Q Going with Iran, Senator Byrd last week was asking Secretary Rumsfeld and Peter Pace about the supplemental money, and asking whether any of this would be going to support a tax on Iran in any way, shape or form. He was eventually told no. Is that, in fact, the case?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, I think you heard our testimony from our officials that are on the Hill, and I would stand by that testimony. I haven't looked at that specific testimony recently.

Q Scott, Senator Feingold is talking about censure relating to the NSA spying program, saying that the President was acting outside the law at a time when White House has said it's trying to codify the President's authority. What's your response to that?
MR. McCLELLAN: Well, the terrorist surveillance program is a program that has helped us to prevent attacks and save lives. It is vital to our nation's security. And it would be interesting to see how many Democrats actually agree with the view of Senator Feingold. Do Democrats support Senator Feingold's view, or do they support this vital program? The American people have made it very clear they support the President's efforts to defeat the terrorists and prevent attacks from happening.
The President has made it very clear he's not going to wait to be hit again. We are going to continue going after the terrorists wherever they are. And if you're talking to al Qaeda, or al Qaeda affiliated terrorists, we want to know. And it's important to keep in mind during a time of war that enemy surveillance is critical in those efforts. So what we ought to be doing is working together to defeat the terrorists, not engaging in partisan politics. So the question becomes, where do other Democrats stand? Do they agree with him in his view? I know Congressman Conyers has expressed a view about impeachment or something along those lines. Is this the view of the Democratic Party?
The enemy is the "terrorists" and al Qaeda 9nudge nudge wink wink) members, not the President. And we ought to be focusing our efforts on going after the enemy and doing everything we can to prevent attacks from happening. And that's what this President has done and will continue to do.

Bush is extremely naive. What he does not realize is that he is every bit as expendible to the people in charge as the American troops overseas are. As soon as he has outlived his usefulness, I expect he will meet an end-in-the-road that will result in some added benefit to his keepers.
Bush, Cheney, Powel, Rice, Rumsfeld and others could easily be implicated in a coming new "attack on the US" and be tied back to 9/11. And while the whole country is struggling to deal with this and their failing economy, the perps (that self interest government within the US government) are home free.
